Automatic updating cross references

First, specify the delimiter between the quotation marks.

In the Cross-References panel, select the cross-reference or cross-references you want to delete.

Luckily Word has a cross-reference capability that can prevent those problems.

When you relink, any changes made to the source cross-reference are removed.

To completely remove a cross-reference, you can also select the cross-reference source and delete it.

Editing cross-reference source text You can edit cross-reference source text.

For example, if you frequently cite to Smith, you might write a footnote that looks something like this: Smith, supra note 5.
